Summary

Bibliographic description

[3], 40, [1] leaves, bound : chiefly ill. ; 42 cm. Running number: 7299. Small coat of arms from head of title page has become detached and is loosely inserted (wrapped in acid-free tissue paper) at front. Extensive damp and mould staining at head of leaves throughout. Death watch beetle damage on leaves 14-38. Silverfish damage at head of leaves [1]-1, 7-13. Provenance: painted coat of arms of the Vendramin family of Venice (the original owners/compilers) pasted onto title page: arms quarterly in the first and quarters a double-headed eagle with crown, in the second and third quarters a fess Or (gold) between two fleur-de-lys on in chief Azure (blue) field and in base Gules (red) field. The Vendramin's art collection was acquired by Jan Reynst (1601-1646) in Venice and after his death passed to his brother Gerard Reynst (1599-1658) in Amsterdam. The collection was dispersed in the 1660s and 1670s as Gerard's widow sold parts to various buyers. This album was acquired by the Dutch scholar and collector Gosuinus Uilenbroek (1658-1740), whose library was sold by auction in Amsterdam in 1729. Purchased at the Uilenbroek sale (lot 760) for "30.0." (presumably Dutch gulden and stuivers) by Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742). Pencil numbers on rear pastedown: "640" (crossed-out) and "615". Binding: seventeenth-century full plain yellowed parchment (sheepskin); damp and mould staining at head of both boards; sewn on four sewing supports; spine cracked and partially missing. Red and blue sprinkled textblock edges.
