Provenance: Inscribed on second flyleaf underneath a little stick-figure drawing: "This is me, wishing Lady Circe many happy returns. James Stephens. Dec. 1929" [presented by the author to Edith Helen Chaplin (1879-1959), m. in 1899 Charles Viscount Castlereagh, 7th Marquess of Londonderry from 1915]. Twentieth-century armorial bookplate (dated 1922) with portrait: "Edith Helen Marchioness of Londonderry. D.B.E." [i.e. Edith Helen Chaplin, m. in 1899 Charles 7th Marquess of Londonderry]. Motto in Scottish Gaelic over portrait ("Tha mo cridhe's an tir nam beann" [My heart is in the land of mountains]). Binding: Twentieth-century full polished mottled calf, double gilt fillet forming a border, gilt tooled on spine. Green leather spine label lettered in gilt. Gilt-top. Bookbinder's stamp on upper turn-in: Bumpus, Ltd. Oxford St., W. Ticket on lower pastedown: "W. Erskine Mayne, 3 Donegall Sq. W., Belfast".
