Extra-illustrated copy with 17 additional engraved views and other illustrations of Norfolk scenes (including Cromer, Felbrigg, Sheringham, Blickling, Gunton and Wolterton), mostly mounted on blank leaves. Provenance: manuscript note in pencil on front pastedown: "Besides the maps & plates belonging to this edn there are inserted 15 extra plates". Manuscript inscriptions on front free endpaper: [1] in pencil "F. H. Barclay Jan. 1899" [i.e. Francis Hubert Barclay (1869-1935), of The Warren, Cromer]; and [2] in ink "This book, from the library of Sir F. H. Barclay of Cromer, was given to me after his death by his son, February 18th 1935. R. W. Ketton-Cremer" [i.e. Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)]. Bookseller's manuscript letter pasted onto rear pastedown: "Orford St Norwich. Jan 7th 1898 [crossed-out] 1899. Sir we have now A collection of Bucks views in Norwich and Norfolk which we have pleasure in reporting but if nothing you care to see we shall not expect you to take the trouble to answer[.] The price for Bartell's Cromer may seem high but being a unique copy we could not buy it so that we can offer it for less a nice copy of the book without extras is now worth 10/- and the small print (Drilling) is so scarce that 5/ have been offered for a copy. Yours respectfully W Hunt bookseller J.H. Barclay Esqr.". On the verso is written: "Bartlett's Cromer, neighbourhood and picturesque scenery[.] Best edition 1806 Royal 8vo. Neatly bound with map of view of Cromer, Felbrigg heath (these are incidental to the book) and fifteen extra plates inserted. These include the rare print of drilling soldiers on the beach. Nett price 20/-". Binding: nineteenth-century half-bound green morocco, with green marbled paper over boards; gilt title and author's name lettered on spine. All leaves detached from binding.
