With a letter laid in at p. 231 from Cornelia Otis Skinner to Anne Sackville (dated Oct 2nd 1944) in which she speaks of the book having been filmed by Paramount; that she is currently playing in "The searching wind" by Lilian Hellman ("It is one of those serious and 'significant' dramas and, to tell you the truth, I'm heartily sick of it ...". She ends "I have often thought of you during these trying times and wondering how you and Charles have been weathering the strain. Alden and I have talked often of our wonderful visit to Knole in those happy days that seem so long ago. Let's hope it will all be over as soon as possible and that we can have a visit again." Provenance: inscribed on half-title "For Anne Sackville with the author's affection and admiration Cornelia Otis Sackville" [i.e. Anne Sackville-West (née Meredith), Lady Sackville, (m.
