Summary

Bibliographic description

[2], 68 p. ; 4to. Imperfect: wanting title page and all after p. 56 (i.e. p. 57-68). Water-staining at head of leaves at front and rear. Foot of leaves containing pp. 35-36 and 37-38 have been cut off and repaired with blank paper containing the catchword in manuscript. Provenance: manuscript inscriptions on front free endpaper: [1] "Dawson Turner, from Mrs Matthew Manby 1851" [i.e. given by Mrs Manby (see below) to Dawon Turner (1775-1858), banker, botanist and antiquarian, of Great Yarmouth]; and [2] "Poems by George Marquis Townshend - and printed by Ann Marchioness Townshend - Given to me by her ladyship 1807. Matt[he]w Manby S Rainham" [i.e. given by Anne, Marchioness Townshend (d. 1819), to one Matthew Manby. Matthew was presumably the son or other relation of Matthew Pepper Manby (d. 1774), Captain of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and afterwards aide-de-camp to Lord Townshend when lord lieutenant of Ireland, later lord of the manor of Wood Hall in Hilgay, Norfolk]. Manuscript letter addressed (on verso) to "Dawson Turner Esqr. The Bank, Yarmouth" attached to front pastedown: "Walsingham June 17, 1851. Many thanks my dear Sir for your note which I received the morning previous to my leaving Capt Manby's containing directions respecting a plant which I shall much value. - You flattered me by saying you would kindly accept a sketch of the monument I placed in the church at Old Walsingham to the memory of my dear husband, which I hope you will approve, as well as the accompanying book, which will I hope find a place in your valuable library. With best compliments to Miss Turner, allow me to subscribe myself my dear Sir sincerely yours Susanna Manby" [Susanna Manby was presumably the widow of Matthew Manby; the Capt. Manby she mentions is possibly her brother-in-law[?] George William Manby (1765-1854), of Great Yarmouth, who was a captain in the Cambridgeshire militia]. Manuscript inscription on front pastedown: "R.W. Ketton-Cremer Felbrigg. 1937" [i.e. Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)]. Clipping from auction catalogue loosely inserted at front: catalogue entry for the Heber copy of this book, priced at £7 10s, with printed note '... A very rare collection, privately printed by the author's wife at their press at Rainham. ...'; beneath this Ketton-Cremer has written in blue ink "The title-page is missing in my copy! I do not understand the two dates given above". Binding: nineteenth-century half-bound calf with marbled paper over boards; gilt fillets and title on spine.
