Provenance: manuscript inscription at head of title page: "Bibliothecae Colbertinae" [i.e. from the library of the great French bibliophile Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Marquis de Seignelay (1619-1683), Chief Minister to Louis XIV; written in the hand of his librarian, Étienne Baluze (1630-1718). Colbert’s library was dispersed at a sale in Paris, 24 May-21 October 1728, and at two sales in London (23 April 1729 and 17 November 1735)]. Manuscript number (auction lot number?) beneath ownership inscription on title page: "11437" [changed from "11436"]. Binding: eighteenth-century full calf; blind double and single fillet border; gilt roll pattern along board edges; gold-tooled spine with floral stamps and roll-tooling, and gilt title on brown leather label. Red burnished edges. Comb- and swirl-marbled endpapers.
