My beloved one [i.e. Leonard Messel] passed peacefully away with Ann, Oliver & Dr. Tait by me & Nurse. His last words to me were: "Oh my beloved"; p.48: "Our last day at Nymans Monday 1947" followed by: "The last night at Nymans Tuesday 1947 The fire began at 3 a.m., Feb.19th. we all spent the rest of the night in the Harness Room in the Stables." Lipstick? stain on upper cover. Provenance: inscribed "To my darling sweet Mother with my fond thoughts Oliver" and in Maud Messel's hand "July 1947" [i.e. from Oliver Hilary Sambourne Messel (1904-1978) to his mother Maud Frances Messel, née Sambourne (1875-1960)]. Also address label for Colonel Messel, Holmsted Manor, laid in. Binding: black morocco, title gold-lettered on spine; "M.F.M." [i.e. Maud Frances Messel] on cover, gold lettered.
