Provenance: anonymous armorial bookplate (rather haphazardly cut-out and pasted in): Gules a pelican in her piety, in chief azure a fleur-de-lis, within a collar of scallop shells with badges [i.e. the Order of Saint Michael] and the coronet of a marquis, all within a collar with fleur de lys, crowned initial H and helmets. Manuscript inscription on front fly-leaf: "M. Editio 1ma." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]; with Mitchell's manuscript code at foot of leaf: "γ'." [i.e. gamma' = Greek number 3]. Manuscript letters on front pastedown: "AP.". Manuscript price[?] on front fly-leaf: "3s"[?]. Manuscript inscription on title page: "Ex legato [Rum]mi D[omi]ni Epi[scopi?] Tholones[?]". Binding: sixteenth or seventeenth-century calf, sewn on five supports; single gilt fillet border; gilt lozenge centrepiece featuring two arabesque tools each stamped twice to form a symetrical pattern, within a frame of two fillets. Rebacked and repaired in tan sheepskin; original spine retained, with gilt fleuron stamps and blind fillet decoration. Strip of manuscript waste lines spine. Pencil note on front pastedown: "Repaired at Cambridge, 1956".
