Provenance: inscribed 'Jane Langton / the gift of her brother / Jan 1820’ [i.e. Jane Langton (1775?-1854) from Peregrine Langton Massingberd (1780-1858)] and ‘This book to be given (after my death) to my dear nephew & niece Charles & Harriett Langton Massingberd / Richmond December 18th / 1844’ [i.e. Charles Langton Massingberd (1815-1887) and his 1st wife Harriet Ann Langford (1823-1855)]. And: ‘These lines were written by my Aunt, Jane Langton, Dr. Johnson’s goddaughter. She died at Richmond, Surrey Aug. 12. 1854’. Inscribed in ink: Harriet Langton Massingberd / Richmond Aug. 23 1854’. Binding: Diced calf, rebacked, gold-lettered spine
