Provenance: inscribed "Darling Mum with all my love William August 1987" [i.e. to Anne, Countess of Rosse, née Messel (1902-1992) from her son William, 7th Earl of Rosse (1936-)]. With a letter laid in from William to Anne, dated August 1987, relating to an upcoming Christie’s sale of Birr Castle Chippendale furniture, and sending this book as "a tiny token of thanks for having had Patrick and me for the night earlier on this month". “You are being fantastically understanding about the Chippendale because we all realise what agony the decision must be causing you …”. With a letter from Patrick, grandson of Anne, dated Sept, 1987, referring to the sale, inside an airmail envelope with notes in Anne’s handwriting. Also a letter to William from Anne, dated Sept. 1987 "I can't resist sending you this letter to keep preciously in the 3rd draw [sic] of my writing table to show how loving & caring a person beloved Patrick is ...".
