Provenance: manuscript inventory number or shelfmark between two parallel lines written in brown ink in a sixteenth-century hand on first front fly-leaf: "425" or "435" (middle number indistinct) [i.e. Claude III de Laubespine (1544-1570), Secretary of State of France and close friend of King Charles IX, who died aged 25 in September 1570. The brown inventory numbers were written into his books after the death of his sister Madeleine de Laubespine-Villeroy (1546-1596), who had inherited her brother's books]. Manuscript book number on front fly-leaf: "(9)". Manuscript former shelfmark (written upside down) in the hand of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) on rear pastedown: "C.5.6". $zBinding: sixteenth-century blind-panelled calf; thin thick thin fillet border mitred at the corners to a frame of thin thick thin fillets; central panel of double blind fillets with blind cornerpiece stamps, within which is a diamond or lozenge of thin thick thin fillets with small stamps at the four points; wreath centrepiece stamp, with small stamp in the centre. Single blind fillet on board edges. Spine rebacked in goatskin, with original spine retained. Seven plain panels on spine, the second lettered in gilt 'Dion'. Original front and rear endpapers, consisting of five leaves at both front and rear: two blank paper fly-leaves, followed by a single leaf of blank vellum as third fly-leaf, followed by two blank paper fly-leaves. Pencil note on front pastedown: "repaired at Cambridge c. 1958".
