[i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Manuscript inscription at foot of title page, obscured by a blank slip pasted over it: "Ex dono Amplissimi Dn: Marcj Welseri ... [one word] Reipub. Augustanae[?] Ioh. Iaubaer[?] Reigorus[?] ... [rest of inscription, one word, illegible]" [possibly Marcus Welser (1558-1614); born in Augsburg; went to Rome 1575-1592; became Stadtpfleger (mayor) in Augsburg in 1600. Welser had some connection with the press known under its address "Ad insigne pinus" (Under the Pine Tree)]. Binding: eighteenth-century[?] gold-panelled sprinkled calf; double gilt fillet border with small gilt cornerpieces; panel of double and single gilt fillets, with gilt cornerpiece stamps; gold-tooled spine, with gilt title on brown leather label. Red and brown sprinkled edges. Marbled pastedowns.
