Provenance: armorial bookplate, motto Dirigat deus, lettered “Leonard Charles Rudolph Messel” [i.e. Leonard Messel (1872-1953)]. Binding: bound uniform with four other works by Smiles in half polished calf; brown marbled paper over boards, marbled endpapers; gold tops; title gold-lettered direct onto spine "James Nasmyth". Binder's stamp "John Bumpus ...".
