Copious annotations in ink and pencil, including additions on title page and dedication to change the meaning of the text. Pencil drawings of leaves on verso title page. On p. [9]: "June 2nd 1845". Provenance: Inscribed in front pastedown "G.N. Curzon 1838" [i.e. George Nathaniel Curzon (1826-1855)], and on title page "George N. Curzon Ch[rist] Ch[urch]" (repeated on dedication page with addition of "Oxford"). Name is repeated many times on front pastedown and back pastedown (there also the name "Victoria" twice). Binding: Nineteenth-century publisher's full grained green cloth, blind panel on covers, gilt lettering on spine.
