Vivian Usherwood’s 1972 poetry collection was the first publication by Centerprise, the Dalston bookshop and community centre which operated between 1971 and 2012 in East London. The success of the publication was a complete surprise: Usherwood’s raw and honest poems resulted in thousands of copies of the pamphlet being sold and his being invited by the BBC to read his poetry on television. The collection was a highpoint in 1970s Black literature, made all the more surprising by the fact that the author was a 12-year-old schoolboy from Hackney.
