Shaaban bin Robert (1909-62) was one of the most prominent Swahili writers of the twentieth century. A celebrated poet, essayist, translator, philosopher and publisher, he played a crucial role in the formalisation of modern Swahili, ensuring its link to the language’s ancient tradition. He was awarded an MBE in the 1962 New Year Honours list – just a few months before his death – for his services to Swahili literature. 'Maisha Yangu' (‘My Life’) is the first, and most celebrated, of Robert’s two autobiographical works. The creative way in which the book weaves together essays and poems garnered much praise and cemented his reputation.
