Summary
A small white envelope stuck by the flap to the inside cover of the book 'Arbor Low' by J. Percy Heathcote (record 3167075). The envelope contains three photographs, two newspaper cuttings and a handwritten note from W.H.Stotts. The white paper envelope is of diamond construction and the triangle closure has been used to stick it to the inside cover of the book 'Arbor Low' by J. Percy Heathcote (record 3167075). On the front side is a handwritten note by William Jnr.; 'Photograph of Mr A. L. Armstrong who conducted a party from Worksop to Arbor Low on 22 June 1957'. When lifted you can access the content and the inside of the is grey with the marking 'Basildon Bond'. The handwritten note is on off white lined paper and is on one side only reading; 'With compliments from W H Stotts Hayton Retford.'. The first of the three photographs shows a man stood to the left holding a coat and obscuring the lady behind. In the right corner you see three gentlemen stood with their backs to the camera and in the centre large white boulders. The image is in landscape black and white with a small white border. On the back is written in pencil 'Arborlow 1958' the name has been scored out along with the '8'. Under this is a printers mark 'ROSE MAGNA PRINT K373'. 'At five wells tumulus, Chelmorton Low 22 June 1957 L. J. Roe & D Vickers (?) R. unknown fraction + back view of W. Stont & A. L. Armstrong'. The second of three photographs shows a group of six men and one women behind a light stone formation, William Jnr. is on the far right with a flat cap and Walter stood next to him in a trilby. The image is in landscape black and white with a small white border. On the back is written in pencil 'Arborlow 1958' the '8' has been scored and replaced with a '7'. Under this is a printers mark 'ROSE MAGNA PRINT K373'. 'Within the finds at Arbor Low 22nd June, 1957. L & R. William Straw, _____?____, Walter. W. Straw M. Jackson, A. L. Armstrong, W. V. Mekin & "Ringo" from Retford.' The first of two newspaper cuttings, taken from 'MANCHESTER GUARDIAN 13 DEC 1958.' handwritten by William Jnr.; 'OBITUARY Mr. A. L. Armstrong Albert Leslie Armstrong, who died on December 3 in Johannesburg, aged 80, was one of the leading archaeologists in the North of England...' The second of two newspaper cuttings; 'MR. A. LESLIE ARMSTRONG Mr. Maurice Bruce writes;- Many people will have heard, with regret, of the death on December 3 of A. Leslie Armstrong, in Johannesburg, after a visit to his son in Rhodesia....'. The last of three photographs of a gentleman stood on his on in front of a stone wall. The image is almost square in format black and white with a narrow white border. On the back hand written in pen; 'A L Armstrong, archaeologist. set 79. photograph taken in the ascent of Chelmorton low, near five wells tumulus 22nd june 1957 P.S. Mr Armstrong died in Johannesburg 3rd Dec. 1958 aged 80.'
