43 v. ;. 8vo. Contains diaries and accounts kept by James Stovin Pennyman (1830-1896). Most volumes begin with a sentence such as: “We are all living happily at the Hall [or Park End]…”. 1890 volumes includes an account of a trip to America at the end of August, which includes references to the suicide of a steerage passenger by jumping overboard on October 2nd, and “A Jew named Solomon hung himself, buried at sea at midnight” October 5th. . The final volume for 1896 has had many preliminary printed and final leaves cut away; the manuscript continues up to his death and the volume contains obituaries, printed funeral service and several black-bordered leaves of writing paper. Entry for January 2, 1896 has “Had much pain in my chest last night, & had to take remedies.” June 2nd has “James Stoving Pennyman died at Ormesby this day – in his 66th year.” Numerous inserts including a photograph of JSP in 1860 vol., letters, newspaper cuttings, particularly lists of P&O steamers, etc. Some extended entries continued at end of volume, e.g. July 16 1855 contains an account of JSP’s sister’s wedding. Provenance: inscribed variously “James Stovin Pennyman Ormesby Hall Middlesbro’ 1854”, “James Stovin Pennyman Ormesby Park End Middlesbrough” etc.” Binding: quarter bound, cloth over boards, (1889 volume wanting spine); cover title “Diary” or “Dunn’s Diary”; year on spine.
