Ink manuscript on titlepage: "It is a pity we do not die when our life is finished. See page 3 [i.e. fisrt line of novel]. Written at White Lodge 7 May 1931 after 8 years of illness" [presumably by Lady Victoria Sackville, 1862-1936]. Further text marking, chiefly on opening pages. Pencil note at head of endpaper: 1st edition. Provenance: decorated bookplate: A good book is the best of friends the same today and forever. One of the books of Victoria Sackville Knole Sevenoaks [i.e. Lady Victoria Sackville, 1862-1936]; manuscript authorial inscription on free endpaper: "To Lady Sackville with the compliments of the author, Mary Borden Jan. 1924". Binding: red publisher's cloth, lettered and decorated in black.
