Provenance

The book was a birthday gift to Churchill from Norman Craven Brook (29 April 1902 - 15 June 1967), a career civil servant. In 1942 Brook was appointed Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, where he first came into close contact with Churchill. From 1951 to 1955, he served as Cabinet Secretary during Churchill's second term as Prime Minister. The leader relied heavily upon Brooks who advised him on procedure, policy, and even on cabinet appointments. He frequently travelled abroad with Churchill for international conferences and important talks. Brook inscribed this copy with his signature as well as a brief message, dated 30 November 1953, addressed to Churchill which reads: "Winston S. Churchill From Norman Brook" The 30th November 1953 was Churchill's seventy-ninth birthday. He was serving his second term as Prime Minister. That morning he’d chaired a meeting of the Cabinet at 10, Downing Street, discussing the re-deployment of the British forces then based in Egypt. The following day WSC left London to fly to the Bermuda Conference accompanied by Brook himself.
