**The Inscribed Books Collection, to which this book belongs, consists of gift inscriptions on third party books given to Sir Winston Churchill from friends, family, and well-wishers, unsolicited presentation copies of books by strangers, as well as presentation copies from authors who were genuine friends and colleagues. After his death in January 1965, Churchill personally bequeathed the collection via his Will as a testament to his national and international achievements. Hudson Strode (31 October 1892 - 22 September 1976) was an American author, historian, biographer and travel writer. His most famous work being his three-volume biography of Thomas Jefferson. Strode's book 'Sweden, Model for the World' was published by Harcourt, Brace & Co. in 1951. In it he recounts his own experiences from visiting Sweden, from the people he met, the places he visited and the things he saw and enjoyed. He also devotes sections to Sweden's history which including the social aspects, the humanitarian achievements, the progress in the arts, in education and in science. He suggests his own explanation of the reason for Sweden's freedom from labour troubles and discusses their position as a great neutral nation.

The book was gifted to Churchill by Olof Nobel, the grand-nephew of Dr. Alfred Nobel who founded the Nobel Prize and invented dynamite. Nobel inscribed the copy with his signature as well a brief message addressed to Churchill which reads: "To the Rt. Hon. Mr Winston Churchill from Olof Nobel" Nobel was also the owner of Hotel Skanegarden in Hastad, Sweden. He had previously written to Churchill on 22 August 1950 inviting him to stay at his hotel during August or September the following year to meet various Swedish conservatives. However, a reply was sent declining the invitation due to the political and military situation involving the Korean War.
