Full description

**The Inscribed Books Collection, to which this book belongs, consists of gift inscriptions on third party books given to Sir Winston Churchill from friends, family, and well-wishers, unsolicited presentation copies of books by strangers, as well as presentation copies from authors who were genuine friends and colleagues. After his death in January 1965, Churchill personally bequeathed the collection via his Will as a testament to his national and international achievements. In January 1950, Churchill was on a holiday on the Portuguese island of Madeira, accompanied by his wife, Clementine and their daughter, Diana. His intention was to spend a few weeks there to recoup and to paint. Churchill had also planned to work on 'The Hinge of Fate', the fourth volume of his war memoirs; hence, the reason they were joined by is literary assistant Bill Deakin, secretaries Jill Sturdee and Elizabeth Gilliatt; plus two Special Branch detectives. However, the keen painter was only able to finish one painting before, on 11th January, the vacation was unexpectedly interrupted by then Prime Minister Clement Attlee's announcement of the Dissolution of Parliament ahead of a General Election which was to place on 23rd February. The painting is displayed in the Studio at Chartwell. Churchill, who was the Leader of the Opposition, returned at once to England by flying boat, but Clementine and Diana remained on the island until January 20th. To commemorate his stay on the island, Churchill was presented with 'Estampas Antigas da Madeira' or 'Old Prints of Madeira'. The book was published in 1935 by Club Rotno and was by the Portuguese writer Joal Cabral Do Nascimento (22 March 1897 - 2 March 1978). It contains prints and descriptions of Madeira’s landscapes, costumes, buildings and coast.
