**The Inscribed Books Collection, to which this book belongs, consists of gift inscriptions on third party books given to Sir Winston Churchill from friends, family, and well-wishers, unsolicited presentation copies of books by strangers, as well as presentation copies from authors who were genuine friends and colleagues. After his death in January 1965, Churchill personally bequeathed the collection via his Will as a testament to his national and international achievements. 'The Land of the Living Heart' was written by Edith Vane-Tempest-Stewart, Marchioness of Londonderry (3 December 1878 - 23 April 1959). Published in 1936, it describes travelling the Western Isles of Scotland by boat. Vane-Tempest-Stewart was a friend and distant relative of Churchill. Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, 2nd Baronet was Churchill's great-grandfather. The Marchioness of Londonderry was remembered for giving eve of parliament receptions for the Conservative party between the wars. In 1915 she founded and ran the Women’s Legion. She was a feminist and spoke effectively in the cause of women’s suffrage.

Provenance
The book was gifted to Churchill by Vane-Tempest-Stewart herself. The Marchioness of Londonderry inscribed the gift with a message, dated Christmas 1951, which reads: "With love and best wishes to you both from Edie Christmas 1951. The prophecy at the end is rather amusing now especially as Winston wings his way everywhere" The prophecy at the refers to Irish mythology and folklore.
