Summary
The first of five newspaper cuttings kept in the book 'The story of the pilgrim fathers, 1606-1623 A.D. . as told by themselves, their friends, and their enemies ; edited from the original texts, by Edward Arber....' by Edward Arber (1836-1912) (record 3131321). Long narrow cutting taken from 'TIMES 30 JUNE. 1959', the date is handwritten at the top of the cutting in pencil; 'CHILDREN IN THE MAYFLOWER By Anthony R. Wagner, Richmond Herald In the annals of religious liberty the Mayflower's voyage of 1620 stands justly upon a peak. It is however,no disparagement of th ePilgrims to point out their debt to men whose less exalted motives had, .....' Arber was born in London. From 1854 he 1878 he worked as a clerk in the Admiralty, and began evening classes at King's College London in 1858. From 1878 to 1881 he studied English literature, under H. Morley, at University College London; and from 1881 to 1894 he was professor of English at Mason College (which later became Birmingham University). From 1894 he lived in London as emeritus professor, being also a fellow of King's College London. In 1905 he received the honorary degree of D. Litt. from the University of Oxford. He married in 1869, and had two sons, one of whom, E. A. N. Arber, became demonstrator in paleobotany at the University of Cambridge.
