Summary
Bibliographic description
2 v. in 1 ([8], 172, [4]; 247, [9] p.) : ill., ports. ; 4to. Running number: 5948. Worm damage at head of many leaves. Provenance: armorial Chippendale crest and coronet bookplate (Franks 17072): 'Earl of Ancram' [possibly William Henry Kerr, 4th Marquess of Lothian (1710-1775), styled Earl of Ancram 1735-1767; or William John Kerr, 5th Marquess of Lothian (1737-1815), styled Earl of Ancram 1767-1775]. Originally from the great library at Newbattle Abbey, the principal Scottish seat of the marquesses of Lothian. Manuscript Newbattle Abbey shelfmark on second front fly-leaf: "d.6.5.". Binding: seventeenth-century full vellum over pasteboards; much of fore-edge of upper cover and part of fore-edge and head of lower cover eaten by mice, the surviving edges having the characteristic teeth marks of rodent damage; single blind fillets to form a border; blind intersecting lines forming an 'X' in the centre of both covers, presumably a guide mark for a centrepiece stamp that was never applied; holes in fore-edge of both boards for two pairs of ties (missing); yapp fore-edges.
