Summary

Bibliographic description

[4], 92, 97, [1] leaves ; 8vo. Running number: 7042. The Greek text (i.e. first [4], 92 leaves) only. Illuminated initials: alternating gold or silver on a black ground with gold or silver leaves and tendrils, within gold frame. Provenance: Jean Grolier (1479-1565). Grolier's ownership inscription in black ink beneath first colophon: "Jo. Grolierij Lugdunen[sis] et amicorum.". Grolier's motto and ownership inscription in black ink on rear vellum pastedown: "PORTIO MEA DOMINE SIT IN TERRA VIVENTIVM." and "Io. Grolierij Lugd. et amicorum.". Library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) of Nocton, Lincolnshire. Eighteenth-century manuscript shelfmark on front pastedown: "F.7.11" [possibly in the hand Richard Ellys]. Eighteenth-century manuscript book number or inventory number on front fly-leaf: "(384)". Twentieth-century pencil code on front fly-leaf: "D54". Binding: bound in the 1520s for Jean Grolier (1479-1565), original green silk velvet over pasteboards; sewn on five double cords; no lettering or tooling; traces of two pairs of green silk ties; plain spine (head damaged, fourth compartment missing); five raised bands; all edges gilt; front endpapers consist of a vellum pastedown followed by a pair of blank paper leaves, rear endpapers consist of a vellum pastedown followed by three blank paper leaves. "This may be the only survivor of the normal style of binding executed for Grolier in the 1520's. It appears from the type of sewing and the number of bands to be French, but the library could have well contained Italian bindings also in this or similar fabrics" -- H.M. Nixon. Bookbindings from the library of Jean Grolier, no. 9. Pencil inscription in the hand of Cecil Clarabut (the National Trust's first Libraries Adviser) on front pastedown: "repaired at Cambridge, 1955". Stored in brown buckram box.
