Pencil notes in the hand of Ernest Shorting on Shorting family connections to churches in vols. 2-4 and 7, the birthplace of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell (1650-1707) in vol. 4, and the birthplace of Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson (1758-1805) in vol. 1. Occasional pencil corrections (in a different hand) to captions in vols. 1-3. Pencil notes on index leaves in vols. 2 and 7. Ephemera: loosely inserted in vol. 1: clipping from bookdealer's catalogue describing this set (price cut out). Loosely inserted photograph of Cley church in vol. 2. Provenance: Manuscript inscription in vol. 1: "Ernest H.H. Shorting" with note in same hand: "The seven volumes are scarce & of value.". Pencil inscription in vols. 2-7: "Ernest H.H. Shorting". Jacobean armorial shield on a mantle bookplate (Franks 2434): 'George Betts of Wortham in Suffolk'. Twentieth-century armorial bookplate (large variant), signed Badeley 1930: ‘Urban Huttleston Rogers Lord Fairhaven’ [i.e.: Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966)]. Binding: Nineteenth-century half brown morocco; purple cloth over boards; sewn onto four recessed cords; five false bands; gilt and blind tooled spines; spines lettered direct (gilt tooled): 'Norfolk churches' and 'Ladbrooke / Vol. I[-VII]'; marbled bookblock edges; blue ribbon marker in all vols.
