Summary
Bibliographic description
[4],[159]-214p. . 4to.. Imperfect: all leaves between second leaf and p. [159] torn away. Inscription on second leaf in author's hand: 'The four plays contained in this book were written at Torloisk between December 1819, & (if my memory serves me rightly) September 1825. ... I therefore believe that my attempts at dramatic writing are closed with the present volume. This copy was written out by my dearest Mother ... 29th September 1838.' Provenance: Inscription on first leaf: 'To Marianne Margaret Compton from her affectionate aunt AJD Clephane' [i.e. gift to the later Lady Marian Alford (1817-1888) from Anna Jane Douglas Maclean Clephane]. Later note on second leaf, in same hand: 'My Mother subsequently exchanged this volume with Marianne, giving her for it a larger and more complete copy of the same plays ...' Armorial bookplate (early 19th-century): 'Torloisk' [i.e. a member of the Clephane family, perhaps the author's father Major-General Douglas Maclean Clephane]. Binding: Nineteenth-century plum calf, faded; embossed design on boards and spine (no title).
