Provenance: Copy 1: Loosely enclosed ALs dated 'April 28th 1919' and signed 'Guy Fleetwood-Wilson' requesting Kipling's permission to reprint the text as per this copy heavily marked in blue crayon as for a revised edition to be entitled: 'Handbook of the history of England to the end of 1913'; - Copy 2: Loosely enclosed a printed leaf headed: 'Patriotism in Education' reprinted from The Times Nov. 26, 1915 and including three letters in defence of the patriotic principles embedded in Fletcher's and Kipling's book which had been repudiated by the President of the Board of Education at the time (1911) as a result of which sales of the book had been low; also loose an ALs dated '23.3.17' and signed 'E. Helme' offering Kipling his 'muck covered' copy of the book saved from the trenches .; Copy 3: Stamped on title page: 'Velhagen & Klasing / Verlagsbuchhandlung' and a pencil inscription: 'Bielefeld / This volume marked by the German / publisher above as his demand for / changes necessary for German / translation if was not allowed / C.K.' - Extensive pencil markings; Copy 4: 'Cited as '1st edition' but not otherwise marked.
