Provenance: Twentieth-century armorial bookplate (small variant), signed Badeley 1930: ‘Urban Huttleston Rogers Lord Fairhaven’ [i.e.: Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966)]. Gilt stamp on rear pastedown: 'Bound for Chas. J. Sawyer, Ltd. London.'. Binding: Twentieth-century Cosway-style binding: full blue morocco; elaborate gilt tooled centrepiece on upper board: monogram 'NG' within pattern of gilt tooled leaves and roses with inlaid red morocco; gilt roll and fillets to form an outer border on boards; gilt stamped cornerpieces on boards: two interlocking C's with leaves and a crown above; small gilt stamped roses, with inlaid white and red morocco, at the head, foot and sides of the boards; sewn onto five raised bands; gilt tooled spine, lettered direct (gilt tooled): 'The story of Nell Gwyn', 'Cunningham' and '1852'; gilt stamped crown, interlocking C's and roses with inlaid white and red morocco in remaining spine compartments; double gilt fillet on board edges; gilt fillets and rolls on turn-ins with small gilt stamped leaves as cornerpieces; red morocco on pastedowns; miniature of Nell Gywn under glass on front pastedown in gilt metal frame with elaborate gilt tooled border of leaves and flowers (with inlaid blue morocco); red watered silk free endleaves; gilt top edge.
