Summary

One of thirteen books gifted by the author to Lady Churchill, between 1889 and 1907. Paul Bourget received Lady Randolph Churchill at his residence called the Plantier de Costebelle (Palm House), his home from 1896 till his death in 1935, located in the commune of Hyères-les-Palmiers , in the department of Var, south France. There is correspondence sent by Paul Bourget to Lady Randolph Churchill found in the ‘Churchill Archive’, 1895-1899. Etudes et Portraits: Sociologie et Litterature (Studies and Portraits: Sociology and Literature): The pieces that make up this third series of Studies and Portraits are divided into two groups. The first includes the exposition and discussion of some problems of politics if one gives to this word the sense in which the great Aristotle already used it: - the search for the natural laws of the city, by means of observation. The very title under which these Social Notes are collected indicates the modesty of the design of their author. He only wanted to bring a new "contribution" - this was the formula dear to Taine - to the doctrine of traditionalism that was his, first by instinct, then by reflection, since he started 'to write. The fundamental theme of his early book, Essays of Psychology, is not the affirmation of a close solidarity between the intelligences and sensitivities of successive generations? Readers who have been interested in these Essays, and since in books such as Lies, the Disciple, Cosmopolis, Overseas, the Step, where this traditionalism by positivism was particularly asserted, will find here a number of analyses that complement or clarify the principles of this doctrine and the method used to discover them. The second group, that of Literature, encloses ten chapters devoted to novelists and poets. Care was taken to indicate in each of these chapters the date and circumstances in which they were written. It was the best way, it seemed, to situate the judgments expressed in these studies, and to excuse their limitations. Inscription & Translation: Respectueux souvenir - In respectful remembrance.
