Provenance: Twentieth-century inscription on frontispiece recto: C. S. Fisher from his friend Wm. Crowther Umbers Augt. 1907 [i.e. to Crowther S. Fisher: cf. Ham House 2.D.4]. Bequeathed to the National Trust by Norman Norris (1917-1991). Inscribed on flyleaf in Norris's hand: Sotheby 157- 1939.. Binding: Nineteenth-century half red morocco binding over marbled boards; gilt and blind fillets; gilt panelled spine; brown spine label with title "Doctor Syntax in London"; sewn on five raised bands.
