Provenance: gilt coat of arms stamped on black morocco patch as armorial bookplate in vol. 1: arms of the Watt family [i.e. owners of Speke Hall], with motto "Vigueur de dessus". Manuscript inscription in pencil on half-titles of vols. 1-2: "Gertrude Watt" [i.e. Gertrude Watt (1824-1891), daughter of Richard Watt III]. Binding: nineteenth-century full calf, with double gilt fillet border; gilt rolls on board edges and turn-ins; gilt-tooled spines, with red title and black author/vol. no. labels. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Binder's label on rear pastedown: 'Bound by Pelton Parade, Tunbridge Wells'.
