Provenance: manuscript inscription on vol. 1 front fly-leaf: "M. 2. vol." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Folded leaf loosely inserted at front of vol. 1, containing extensive manuscript bibliographic notes on this edition of the Bible in an unidentified eighteenth-century hand (definitely not that of either Sir Richard Ellys or John Mitchell), begins: "This book contains 1. The Vulgate Latin - (V) 2. The Latin version of Leo Juda (N.) Tiguri 1543. 3. The notes of Vatablus & Rob. Stephens. 4. The various sections of the Vulgate. The rest in common with other books. Bought Feb. 23. 1720/21 cost - 10s. ...". Binding: seventeenth-century sprinkled calf; triple blind fillet border on boards; gilt roll decoration on board edges; blind fillets on spines, plus gilt title label and gilt vol. number stamped directly onto spine. Blue sprinkled edges.
