Dates of reading: Dec 22.1918 Welcombe at start; GOT ends: 'Have now read every word on the 1500 pages of this extrordinary book, and do not regard the time as wasted. Whatever the merits, or demerits, of Purcell as a biographer his readers know Manning as we know Dr Johnson, or Sir Walter Scott; and Manning, with all his qualities and defects, was well worth knowing Welcombe Jan 24 1919'. Provenance: Multiple owners: armorial bookplate, lettered: Honore et amore with manuscript under: Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie [novelist and dramatist who wrote under the pseudonym John Oliver Hobbes (1867-1906)]. Over this a leaf of paper is pasted in with the manuscript ' "John Oliver Hobbs'" [sic] copy'. Twentieth-century pictorial armorial bookplate, a re-working of an earlier William Bell Scott pictorial Trevelyan bookplate (Franks 29799) of Sir Walter Calverley Trevelyan (1797-1879), lettered: Charles & Mary Trevelyan [i.e. Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan (1870-1958), & Mary Katharine, (m.1904).] Arms: Trevelyan impaling Bell. Not in Franks.. Binding: Publisher's red cloth.
