v.1. . 8vo..Ms. notes in the hand of Sir George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1928), some his own thoughts, others those of his uncle Lord Macaulay. On flyleaf: 'The marks on the outer margin, and the notes signed M, are copied from macaulay's Bipontine edition. He does not seem to have regularly marked the "Octavius" '. Dates of reading for Macaulay: - June 5,8,9,12,13,14,15,16,17,18 1836; June 26,27,28,29, July 2,5,6,7,9,12 1837. Multiple dates of reading for GOT include: July 19 1909 with a note 'Ah me. I was reading this soon after dear little Paul died' (after a section of Caligula 'quorum duo infantes adhuc rapti, unus jam puerascens' - refers to GOT's grandson, son of Robert Calverley Trevelyan) and Dec 6 1916 'Lloyd George called on to form a government'.. Provenance: Pastedown obscures armorial bookplate of former owner, lettered S.T. Galton (possibly Samuel Tertius Galton, 1783-1844).. Binding: Nineteenth century full leather binding, rebacked; red and green spine labels, gilt lettered.
