Summary
Bibliographic description
v.2. 8vo.. With manuscript notes and dates throughout, explained in a note by Sir George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1928) on the endpaper of vol.1: 'The marginal lines and notes are from Macaulay's Deux Ponts edition. NB. I did not read through Aulus Gellius: but observed the contents of the chapter, glanced through the text if it excited my curiosity, and carefully read all, and all around, Macaulay's notes and marginal lines.' GOT's note and dates of reading on p. 934: 'August 6 1836', 'December 14 1837', 'Aug 10 1918 George came to Wallington from Italy this morning'; p. 1006: 'Aug 13 1918. Janet and the children left to-day - George yesterday', 'December 24 1837'. Manuscript dates of reading at end: 'August 12 1836, Dec 25 1837, (two important days to an Englishman) and 'Aug 15 1918 Wallington. I say farewell to Aulus Gellius with regret; and am inclined to think that I like him even as much as did Macaulay. Perhaps a little better, because at 80 one is more of the age for trifles than at 35: and prettier trifling than the setting of the dialogues I hardly know'. Provenance: Pastedown obscures armorial bookplate of former owner, lettered S.T. Galton (possibly Samuel Tertius Galton, 1783-1844).. Binding: Nineteenth-century full calf, rebacked; red and green spine labels.
