On p. 830 & 831 an anonymous piece has the manuscript note: 'This is far and away the worst Latin I have ever read of the great Ciceronian age of prose. The text is mortally corrupt; but besides that, the style is detestable. And yet I read it with interest' (GOT); echoes Macaulay: 'It is dreadfully corrupt July 10 1917'. Provenance: Pastedown obscures armorial bookplate of former owner, lettered S.T. Galton (possibly Samuel Tertius Galton, 1783-1844)..
