Summary
Bibliographic description
2v. . 8vo.. Copious manuscript notes throughout in the hand of Sir George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1928). Multiple dates of reading, including Sept 18 1915 Wallington; 'July 3 1922 A glorious winter'; 'June 6 1924 Wallington'; 'Finished Herodotus, all of him, once again this day Sept. 10 1925. He is a cordial in old age, and an anodyne in poor health. But I now shall pass willingly enough to Thucydides. I have just purchased a Thucydides with a fine, clear legible type. My old copy was bought 73 years ago, at Harrow! [This is Wallington W.6.1-2]. I am reading, side by side with my two Greek historians, the Annals and the Histories of Tacitus. Macaulay found in the three of them "something he "could find in no one else" ; and my experience is the same as his. G.O. Trevelyan.(v.II, p.494-5).. Provenance: manuscript on title page of both vols: 'GO Trevelyan [i.e. Sir George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1928). Binding: Publisher's cloth.
