Bibliographic description
vi,[2],391,[1]p.. Bookseller's price of 7/6 on flyleaf. Copious manuscript notes and marginal marks in the hand of Sir George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1928), including on free endpaper: 'The marginal lines, and notes, are copied from Macaulay's Dindorf Edition, - those which are copied in ink.' On p. 60 GOT writes: 'Till this my twelfth or fifteenth reading of Theocritus I was not aware how corrupt the text was. When this editor differs from old Dindorf I must own that, to my view, I often prefer Dindorf. But there is a great deal to be learned from Mr. Cholmeley's notes.' Macaulay read his text in Calcutta in 1835 and 1836, GOT's dates include 1903; 'Independence Day' 1904 'There is no poem so good about Washington'; 1918 'Nov 4 Austria goes out of the war'; 1919. P.166 'What an admirable poem! ... I wish I had talked it over with Mr Gladstone.' With scraps of paper laid in as bookmark at p.67 and 191.. Binding: Publisher's red cloth.
