Copious manuscript notes in the hand of Sir George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1928) including on free endpaper: 'The marginal lines, and the notes marked with an M, are all Macaulay's, transferred from the Bipontine edition, except any lines on the inner margin.' Macaulay read his copy in November 1835 and September 1837. GOT's many dates of reading include: 'Began Christmas Eve 1911. Broke off Jan 19 1912'; 'Began again, after finishing my "George the Third and Charles Fox", March 1914 Welcombe'; 'Sept 17 1914 The Germans beaten back from Paris'; 'June 25 1920 Wallington.
