v.2. 8vo.. Some leaves have small sections cut away. With manuscript notes, some in an unidentified nineteenth-century hand, but mainly in the hand of G.O. Trevelyan (1838-1928), of which some are transcribed from Macaulay's marginalia in another edition. G.O.T. notes on flyleaf: 'The Macaulay lines of approbation are on the outside margin. His notes are marked marked with the ''M''. Macaulays dates of reading: May 24,25,26,27 1836; December 10,12,13 1837. GOT's dates of reading include: p.740: 'A very great man and a rare good writer. But a very difficult one to read, I must confess, as a student of very mature age. (1924)', 'July 17 1925' on p. 841, p.862 and p,865; July 24 1920; 'December 24 1924 [..]I am reading them all once again with ? if indeed I can live to finish them, this is the 4th time in this century that I have read [Tacitus, Herodotus and Thucydides] all through'.
