Provenance: sixteenth or seventeenth-century manuscript inscription above the anchor of the printer's device on title page: "Iacobi …" [the surname blotted out in ink]. Eighteenth-century manuscript inscription in black ink on second front fly-leaf verso (facing title page): "C 1710 2M3 J Bridges" [i.e. purchase code, date and autograph of John Bridges (1666-1724), antiquarian and lawyer; Bridges' library was sold in London, 7 Feb. 1725/26]. Lot 807 in Bridges sale catalogue 'Bibliothecae Bridgesianae catalogus' (London, 1725 [i.e. 1726]). Library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) of Nocton, Lincolnshire; Ellys bought a number of books at the Bridges library sale in 1726. Manuscript capital letter written in ink at head of front free endpaper recto: "S" (found in a number of Blickling's books but unknown as to what it means). Manuscript inscription in black ink on front pastedown and on verso of front free endpaper: "Oppian. / apud / Aldum", probably instructions for the spine label from a former owner to the binder. Binding: seventeenth-century gold-tooled parchment over pasteboards; sewn on three supports; gilt roll tool border, gilt diamond-shaped centrepiece made from four impressions of a floral tool; fore-edges extended slightly and folded over; gold-tooled spine, with same floral tool as on covers within compartments of a leafy tool, roll tool at head and tail; red leather spine label (faded to pink and white) with gilt title 'OPPIAN / APUD / ALDUM'; red sprinkled bookblock edges.
