Binding: Twentieth-century Cosway-style binding: full red morocco; miniature of Madame de Pompadour inset on upper board within gilt brass metal frame with outer border of blue morocco onlays and black roll; gilt fillets and rolls to form an outer border on boards; elaborate gilt tooled decorative border of lilies, leaves and tulips on upper board with white, blue and green morocco onlays; gilt tooled cornerpieces on lower board: lilies with white and blue morroco onlays; sewn onto five raised bands; gilt tooled spine: lilies with white morocco onlays; spine lettered direct (gilt tooled): 'Madame de Pompadour' and 'H. Noel Williams'; double gilt fillet on board edges; gilt rolls and fillets on turn-ins with gilt tooled cornerpieces: lilies with white and blue morroco onlays; miniature of Louis XV inset on front pastedown within gilt brass frame and gilt rolled outer border of leaves and roses with red morocco onlays; gilt textblock edges; blue morocco endpapers; single gilt fillet to form a border on rear endpaper verso.
