Binding: Early twentieth-century full maroon morocco; single gilt fillet to form an outer border; gilt stamped centrepieces: coat of arms of the Commonwealth; gilt stamped cornerpieces: laurel wreath with single letter above (letters 'P' and 'R' in top corners, 'O' and 'C' in lower corners); sewn onto five raised cords; spine lettered direct (gilt tooled): 'Oliver Cromwell / Gardiner'; gilt stamped laurel wreaths and letters 'P', 'R', 'O', 'C' in spine compartments; gilt stamped lion (crest of Edward Penton) in final spine compartment; double gilt fillet on board edges; elaborate gilt rolled turn-ins; gilt top edge; green watered silk endleaves. Binder's gilt stamp on front turn-in: 'Bound by Zaehnsdorf'.
