Eighteenth-century[?] manuscript former shelfmark on verso of front free endpaper: "2.&.17". Binding: sixteenth-century English (London) blind panel-stamped brown calf over peripheral cushioned wooden boards, ca. 1521; sewn on two supports; covers with blind thin-thick-thin fillet intersecting framework containing a blind-stamped horizontal panel of the royal arms of Henry VIII arms encircled by the Garter in the centre, and Tudor emblems at each corner of it, the whole being surrounded by an inscribed border (see J. Basil Oldham 'Blind Panels of English Binders', heraldic panels HE.16 on upper cover, HE.15 on lower cover); Tudor emblems on upper cover (on the left) the Tudor rose and fleur-de-lis of France and (on the right) a castle (Castile) and cleft pomegranate of Aragon, emblems on lower cover (on the left) the Tudor rose and cleft pomegranate and (on the right) a castle and fleur-de-lis of France; the legend around the border (with differences in the arrangement and spelling) reads "Deus det nobis suam pacem et post mortem vitam eternam amen"; remnants of two clasps on upper board (stubs of leather straps each with two rivets remain) and two brass catches on lower board; spine with three raised bands (one false) and divided into four panels, first (smaller) panel damaged but with remnants of double gilt fillets, second panel has brown leather label with gilt title 'GESTA ROMANORUM MORALIZATA', third and fourth panels with gilt double fillet frames containing gilt lozenge-shaped foliate stamp, additional gilt fillets at foot of fourth panel; head and tail of spine repaired in goatskin; brown sprinkling on bottom edge and on foot of fore-edge of textblock; manuscript title "gesta Romano[rum]" written on fore-edge of textblock.
