On the ‘back’ board, remains of an outside hookof handmade laid paper within a parchment guard Structure: Sewn on six single strap-type tanned supportsEdges: Plain cut, showing proof, possibly originally coloured yellow Spine Lining: Moderate round with 45° joints, and no liningsEnd Bands: worked 2/2 left to right over single paper-roll cores in plain uncoloured thread. Cores cut at the joints Bookmark: NoneBoards: Beech wood boardswith external cushion along back edge with internal chamfer and bevel. Other edges square on internal and external edges. 1,2,5,6 of 6 slips only laced in. Shallow-angle back cornering. Covering: Brown tanned calf with early 19th-century pale brown calf overbackTooling Spine: Spine not visible. Later label and volume numberTooling Sides: Blind tooled boards with central lozenge formed by blind roll within a double roll frame within a triple fillet border Furniture: Originally had hook and bar type clasps and catchplates, the latter now removed, and stubs of lower strap surviving only Enclosure: NoneBinding Notes: In the course of the repair, the board have been reversed, so that the originla ront board in now at the back. Unusual colouration on inside of ‘back’ board which must apparently be original. The rolls are Oldham HE a (3) and HM a (3), ascribed by him to London, 1580-5.

Provenance: manuscript price on vol. 1 front fly-leaf: "Đ6: - 2 vol". manuscript initials on vol. 1 title page: "H: H:". manuscript inscription on inner rear board: "Mr[?] Hawes in Russell Court over ag[ain]st. ye ffoot Guards at St James's House". Binding: in sixteenth-century blind roll calf binding over wooden boards. Outer frame formed by borders of blind thin thick thin fillets; two middle frames of blind rolls: (1) with heads in medallions, (2) with castle gates, fleur-de-lys, heraldic shields, portcullises and roses, both signed with binder's mark; inner lozenge of blind rolls of type (2). NB These rolls need checking in Oldham. Bracket marks of pair of clasps and catches (missing). Double blind fillets on board edges. Completely rebacked with 17th/18th century tan calf, including a third of both upper and lower boards.
