Orientation: Vertical Text Substrate: handmade wove paper, with inserted leves of a heavier handmade laid wove. Pasted-in india proofs Ink/Pigment: Black printing and engraving ink with pencil annotations Type: BOUND BOOK Binding Type: Case binding, bds & cover Date of Binding: contemporary Binder's Name: British End Leaves: sewn double-fold of thin, white, wove paper, the outermost leaf pasted to the board Structure: British Edges: plain cut, no decoration, Spine Lining: flat, no joints, with transverse linings of mull above and below the supports, added as a repair of the front joint and hidden under an added slip of wove paper. They do not go onto the back board. End Bands: None Bookmark: None Boards: 2mm rope fibre couched laminate boards, no back cornering. Covering: quarter decorated bookcloth (alternating bands of hatched and solid black on a tan-coloured background) with a stone marbled paper on the sides. Tooling Spine: gold-tooled title on a red tanned goatskin label, reading tail to head Tooling Sides: Furniture: None Enclosure: None Binding Notes: The binding is of interest in that it is not ‘mainstream’ work and dates I think from the 1840s (when the decorated bookcloths were popular). The black textile tapes on which it is sewn are very unusual.
