Slips of paper loose inside with identification (in 20c. hand) of fictionalised characters (e.g. "Crown Prince = John 2nd Earl" [Brownlow]).. Provenance: No ownership marks, but clearly the property of Lady Marian Alford.. Binding: Vellum boards, with gilt decoration and coloured leather inlays, with title in central cartouche, arms with M A R Y in roundels at each corner, and quotation from Chaucer in diagonal strips: "In the midst was seen A lady of a more majestic mien By stature and by nobless markd Their sovereign Queen". Small brass studs at corners. Gilt doublures with moire silk pastedown and facing page. Edges gilt. Stamp on flyleaf: Bound by Birdsall & Son Northampton.
