The auncient ecclesiasticall histories of the first six hundred yeares after Christ, . written in the Greeke tongue by three learned historiographers, Eusebius, Socrates, and Euagrius. Eusebius Pamphilus Bishop of Cæsarea in Palæstina vvrote 10. bookes. Socrates Scholasticus of Constantinople vvrote 7. bookes. Euagrius Scholasticus of Antioch vvrote 6. bookes. VVherevnto is annexed Dorotheus Bishop of Tyrus, of the liues and endes of the prophetes, apostles and 70. disciples. All which authors are faithfully translated out of the Greeke tongue and now perused and corrected by Meredith Hanmer, Doctor of Diuinitie. Last of all herein is contained a profitable chronographie collected by the said translator, with a copious index of the principall matters throughout all the histories.

Leaf N4 torn (no loss of text). Marginal notes, mostly devotional, in ?16c. hand, incl. name John Strand of Spilsby on pp. 222,292,368,400,402,444 and 456. Childish marginal notes probably in hand of Samuel Cust (1593/4-1663) or possibly his grandson (1656/7-1683) on pp.128-50, 177, 340 and 528, mostly with repeated statement "England hath in men 00000000 / Scotland hath in men 00000000" (some have "Spaine" and "Irelande" added), some with unclear notes about Samuell Cust and his right or left hand.. Provenance: Signature on final page: Jane Hussey (crossed through) [= Jane Hussey, aft. Hatcher (c. 1654-1734), cousin of Young Sir John Brownlow]. Bookplate loose in fold of vellum wrapper: Lord Brownlow's Grantham House. Binding: Vellum wrapper (16c.; worn and stained); traces of ties. Text-block loose in wrapper (stitching decayed), flyleaves loose and crumpled. In conservation tissue.
